A Night Ride with Scul

I had heard whisperings of Scul for many years before standing on a street corner one night and watching them whiz by, disco balls blazing and dance music pumping. It was all so goofy and joyful, while also having an element of secrecy and cool: everyone in Scul makes their own "ships", or altered bikes. They have code names and only ride after midnight. And it's nearly impossible to join, even if you know someone in the group.

For ages I wanted to ride with and photograph these mysterious people; finally, one night, I got to join them, and it was even better than I could have imagined.

One of the first things I covered for the Scout was this classical music concert held at the Aeronaut Brewery in Somerville. It was packed. There were so many wonderful juxtapositions of formal and casual, of young and old and stuffy and hip, of "elite" and totally accessible. It was a true community gathering.

Here's a couple of fun confessions: 1. I was a performer in The Slutcracker for the first few years. 2. and ... The Slutcracker is what got me interested in photography. I had been a writer before, but I felt there were not enough words to describe what I was seeing, so I took photos. I submitted those photos to a photo school, I got in, my whole life changed. I kept returning for 10 years, documenting the evolving scene.
